Secured by design

How to improve your home security with Secured by Design

You can easily improve your home security by using products supported by Secured by Design – the official UK Police initiative supporting the principles of ‘designing out crime’.

The scheme promotes the use of security standards and products receive the stamp of approval once they have met Secured by Design’s rigorous testing guidelines, giving you better piece of mind.

Research has indicated that homes using products and materials that meet Secured by Design’s standard are up to 75% less likely to be burgled and show a reduction of 25% in criminal damage.

When should you consider improving your home security with Secured by Design?

Old frames, especially timber ones, are likely to have been saturated by rain and mould, and over the years their defence against the elements lessens, which can weaken the frames.

Old glazing can often lead to condensation building up in your windows, revealing gaps in the panels and making it easier for thieves to break in.

If this sounds familiar, it’s time to upgrade the security of your windows and doors. Secured by Design windows come with fully reinforced frames and more secure glass units, especially where a window can be susceptible to break ins like a window at the back of the property. Ground floor windows usually have laminated glass, which is 6.4mm thick compared to the standard 4mm.

Get in touch today and our friendly team will be able to guide you on the best products to suit all budgets – 01785 811558.

What else can you do to improve your home security?

  • If your budget is limited, focus on doors, locks, windows and perhaps a small safe for your valuables.
  • Choose a supplier by looking for products with the Secured by Design Police Preferred Specification logo, as these meet high standards.
  • When buying a new a door it is better to buy a new door set, the complete assembled frame and door, certified to British Standard PAS 24-1 ‘Doors of Enhanced Security’.
  • If your door is PVCu or Composite then it should be fitted with a Multipoint lock.
  • When buying patio doors ask for the sliding section to be on the inside and for anti-lift blocks. Multi-locking systems are recommended or have mortise security bolts with removable keys at the top and bottom of both doors.

why you should upgrade your windows

Seven reasons why you should upgrade your windows

A new report has revealed the top reasons why you should upgrade your windows.

Eurocell’s The Future Home Report ranked energy efficiency as the top reason and improved durability at the bottom of the list, created from the findings of a survey of 1,000 25 to 40-year-olds who either own or rent homes.

According to homeowners, the top reasons why you should upgrade your windows were:

  1. Improved energy efficiency (52%)
  2. More natural light in the home (38%)
  3. Noise reduction (35%)
  4. Because they’re old or broken (25%)
  5. Security (24%)
  6. Aesthetics (19%)
  7. Improved durability (9%)

In the survey, 52% of people said they wanted to see windows with higher energy levels. Sustainable materials were also in demand, with 26% of people saying they wanted to see these used more. Floor-to-ceiling windows were a hit in terms of design trends.

Our windows make more of ambient heat. In winter, the energy efficient coated glass used in our windows retains warmth within the home. It’s also designed to exploit radiant heat energy from the sun. These properties result in significant fuel savings compared to a single glazed dwelling.

Here’s why you should upgrade your windows to an energy efficient option: by choosing an energy efficient window, you can reduce condensation in your home; reduce your carbon footprint; reduce your energy bills and add value to your property.

Industry Price Rises

A message to our customers

For the past year, our suppliers have been holding back increases to material costs to help us keep our products as competitive as possible. The raw materials that create our UPVc, glass and hardware are just some of the elements needed to make a beautiful looking window or door.

After lengthy meetings with our suppliers over the last six months, they have made it clear that they cannot keep absorbing the price increases and will now have to pass those increases onto us. Due to increased manufacturing costs of plastics and metal hardware, the industry as a whole will be affected.

We will try to keep price rises to a minimum and attempt to absorb some of the increases without affecting the quality service we pride ourselves on. We will continue to offer a brilliant product at a competitive price.

We understand that not many companies would openly acknowledge rising costs, but we have been in business for over 35 years now and we have always tried to be honest with our customers.

We thank you all for being our customers over the years and look forward to working for you again in the future.

Update your conservatory

Brighten up your home: how to update your conservatory

Has your conservatory been neglected for a while? If your dreams of bringing extra light and space into your home have dwindled since you first invested in your extension, then fear not, there are lots of ways to breathe new life into your home and update your conservatory.

Declutter your space

Don’t use your conservatory as a storage room or as an overflow section of your house. In order to brighten up the space in your home, you need to create space. The new year is a great excuse to clear out unwanted or unused belongings and give your home the fresh start it needs.

Avoid filling bookshelves and windowsills with too many belongings and create additional storage to avoid clutter build-up.

Update your conservatory

Temperature control

Is your conservatory unusable in the winter and a greenhouse in the summer? Controlling the temperature in your conservatory will make it a true extension of your home – and you don’t have double your heating bill to do so.

Older conservatories don’t always have the benefit of coated glass in their windows, meaning they’re not as efficient when it comes to maintaining a reasonable temperature in extreme weather. Not only will replacing your windows make the space more liveable but they’ll also reduce your energy bills – find out more here.

Another solution to temperature issues is to update your conservatory roof. Refurbishing your existing roof with newer, technologically-advanced tiling can help to regulate the temperature, creating a more comfortable space in your home.

This kind of roofing system can be installed in as little as three days, resulting in less stress and disruption to your household.

Brighten your décor

There are a number of ways to create more natural light in your home and take advantage of the light you do have. For example, once you’ve decluttered, take down any dark wall hangings or curtains that make the room feel more enclosed.

Using lighter, calmer tones and painting any wall space in a neutral colour palette will make the room feel more open and spacious. Other interior design tricks, such as adding mirrors and opting for high-shine flooring and furnishings, will reflect light instead absorbing it.

Embrace nature with a bi-fold

If you’re looking for a big impact in your conservatory or living space, try a bi-folding door and really brighten the room. Wall-to-wall glass will bring in enough light to boost anybody’s mood and allows you to appreciate your garden all year round. What could be better than a room with a view?

Bi-folding doors create a beautiful indoor/outdoor experience during the summer and will update the look of your home as well as your conservatory.

Target Windows employees celebrate over 60 years of service

Three employees of a Stoke-on-Trent window company have racked up 63 years’ service between them.

Target Windows, based in Meir Heath, has branches in Stone and Uttoxeter and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year.

Ken Roberts, from Stone, has worked for the company for 25 years after starting as a sales advisor.

The 68-year-old is now semi-retired and assists the current sales team. He said: “The customers have become much more discerning and the range of products offered now means the sales team have to have far more product knowledge.”

He added: “I wouldn’t change anything because I enjoy my job and working for a family-run company.”

Showroom assistant Brenda Parkes, 59, from Uttoxeter, has served Target Windows for 20 years and is so dedicated to the company that many call her Mrs Target.

She said: “I will go out of my way to help people choose the right product for their needs and requirements. You could say I’m like a stick of rock – cut me in half and it will say Target Windows through and through! This wouldn’t have been possible without the recognition and support of the family, Jane, Alan, Mick and Guy, for which I’m very grateful.”

Brenda has enjoyed working in different departments, starting with the Uttoxeter showroom and progressing to the service department before being based where she is now, at the Stone showroom.

She said: “The double-glazing industry has changed and improved so much over the years with many more quality UPVC products available, and being FENSA registered is a great boost for us here at Target Windows.”

Mark Underwood, 51, from Meir Hay, has worked for the small family-run company for 18 years as a surveyor. His role now also includes running the building works related to conservatories and home extensions.

He said: “The range of products and services has increased, along with customer expectations of a well-established company like Target.

“I enjoy working with a fantastic team, who are always there to help and back you up with any situation. They are not just work colleagues, but good friends and I am proud to have been involved and to have seen how the company has grown to what it is now.”

To mark the company’s 35th anniversary Target Windows is currently offering 35% off all windows doors and conservatories on selected orders. For more information visit targetwindows.co.uk or call 01782 398021.

Target Windows record May 2018

Target Windows celebrates record-breaking May

A Stoke-on-Trent window company is celebrating a record-breaking month which saw sales double compared to this time last year.

Target Windows, based in Meir Heath, has put the success down to an open day and offers celebrating the firm’s 35th anniversary.

Director Guy Basnett said: “Our open day on May 5 and 6 was really successful, and we have also invested in a marketing campaign promoting offers and massive savings, which are running all year.

“I think the fantastic weather has also boosted enquiries, alongside traditional word of mouth recommendations.

“We are a family-run business and we have built a great reputation over the past 35 years, so we’d just like to thank our customers for their support.”

The boost has meant the business has been able to hire a new salesperson, Brian Mitchell, who brings a wealth of experience within the industry, working for national companies and local businesses.

Mr Mitchell, 58, from Stafford, said: “I’ve only recently joined Target, but already I have been made to feel very welcome. They are a well-respected company and it’s a pleasure to join them in such an important anniversary year.”

Target Windows has further increased its offering this month by making a deal with Kolorseal, allowing customers to choose practically any colour for their windows and doors.

Mr Basnett added: “We’re really excited about this partnership because these days customers want more colour choices. We’ve noticed that Chartwell Green UPVC windows are really popular, because that’s one of the most interesting choices which have been available – but now customers can have hot pink, purple, red, whatever colour they want really.”

The firm has also gained several new contracts, including winning more work with the Harper Group providing windows and doors for local housing and also continuing its work with the Dogs Trust to kit out several new kennels.

Douglas Macmillan Hospice

Stoke-on-Trent window company raises cash for Douglas Macmillan Hospice

A Stoke-on-Trent window company has raised £100 for a hospice during a weekend to mark 35 years in business.

Target Windows, based in Meir Heath, raised the cash by holding a raffle in aid of the Douglas Macmillan Hospice at its open weekend on May 5 and 6.

Director Guy Basnett, who presented the funds to Stephanie Bradbury, business development fundraiser for the hospice, said: “It was a really successful, sunny weekend and we are pleased to have been able to raise some more money for this fantastic charity.”

Target Windows is an official corporate partner of the Dougie Mac and Mr Basnett raised over £1,800 in February after spending a day locked in a jail cell as part of the hospice’s Jail or Bail Challenge.

Aside from the raffle, ten members of staff have now signed up for the charity’s lottery, which raises £1.5million to help fund specialist care services.

Target Windows is now celebrating the launch of its new website at targetwindows.co.uk. For more information call 01782 398021.

Jane and Guy Basnett

Stoke-on-Trent window company celebrates 35th anniversary

A Stoke-on-Trent window company is celebrating 35 years in business.

Target Windows, based in Meir Heath, was established in 1983 by businessman Alan Tune, who manufactured windows for a local double-glazing firm.

But Alan found himself with a factory full of machinery and no customers after the firm he was supplying went out of business.

He opened a small showroom in Radford Street, Stone, where his sister Jane and his wife Sylvia would make appointments for Alan to see customers who required quotes for windows, doors and conservatories.

As demand increased, Jane assisted with sales appointments, and the small showroom was soon outgrown. Target relocated to its current home at The Fillybrooks in Stone and expanded into Uttoxeter.

In 2002, current company director Guy Basnett joined the team, after marrying Jane in 1999. His experience in sales opened the commercial market. Alan’s brother Mick is also part of the management team and has many years of experience in the industry. The family business has gone from strength to strength.

Mr Basnett said: “It’s a very exciting time for Target. We are now focusing on securing commercial contracts throughout the UK on new-build sites, schools, animal re-homing projects and refurbishment projects.

“Many new products are set to be introduced to the existing range as the domestic market continues to evolve, to meet the demand of our many clients wanting to maximise their living space.

“We’re so proud of what we have achieved and to mark our 35th anniversary, we will be hosting a celebration event at our Stone showroom on the bank holiday weekend of May 5 and 6, 10am to 4pm. Customers old and new are invited and there will be a raffle in aid of the Douglas Macmillan Hospice, with vouchers worth up to £300.”

The company ran a Facebook competition this month, where anyone living at a property with a combination of 3 and 5 in their property number could enter. The prize of a luxury M&S hamper worth £100 was won by Ruby Wilson, from Uttoxeter.

She said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have won the Target competition and this prize has made my day.”

Ruby added: “I have been very happy with Target’s service, from ordering to installation, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.”
